Miss Dance Drill Team International,
Taking it From the Top

As we all know, the concept of Miss Dance Drill Team was contrived and developed by the late, beloved, Dr. Kay Teer Crawford. What only a few may know is that Kay, along with Ken and Jean Richard of Australia and Jack Kogoma of Group Dynamics, Inc. began an annual tradition of the Miss Dance Drill Team International Competition.
The first International Competition took place in 1982 and ran concurrently, as it is this year with the Miss Dance Drill Team USA Pageant. From then the Miss Dance Drill Team International Competition was on the move. With the International Competition growing each year, giving participants the opportunity to tour cities, meet fellow drill teamers, and so much more. Japan staged the next several Miss Dance Drill Team International Competitions, the first one held at Kokugikan, a sumo-wresting arena - which had never before housed the likes of dancers, cheerleaders, and majorettes. The Japanese immediately demonstrated the respect and commitment to the event that had become their trademark by diligently raising the arena floor an unbelievable 10 feet to give spectators and fans better viewing and a greater appreciation for the art of dance drill team.
From 1985 to 1987, following the Miss Dance Drill Team International Competition in Japan, many participants remained in Tokyo to take part in a colorful annual teenage carnival called Freeval. This cultural event was held on the ground of the famous Meiji Shrine Park and provided yet another opportunity to showcase dance drill team for appreciative Japanese audiences. In 1993, select participants were asked to perform in the Hello Gifu Expo in Gifu City.
In Japan, The Miss Dance Drill Team International Competition flourished. The event was televised throughout the nation and at one point was held at the beautiful Yoyogi National Stadium, one of the venues built for the 1964 Olympics. In the late 1990's the International Competition moved to Nagoya, Japan. In Nagoya's Rainbow Hall, participation and spectatorship hit never before seen highs.
In 1999, we were on the move again. Back to it's California origin, The Miss Dance Drill Team International Competition was once again held in conjunction with the Miss Dance Drill Team USA Pageant in Long Beach, California - showing it's renown strength and popularity. For the millenium, we traveled to exotic South Africa! The 2000 Miss Dance Drill Team International Competition took place at Sun City Resort, where participants saw what many only dream about.
Soon, the Dance Drill Team family we had grown to love suffered its first loss, with the death of Ken Richards. Ken and his wife Jean were instrumental in the development of Miss Dance Drill Team International. In his memory, the 2001 Miss Dance Drill Team International Competition was held in his home county of Australia. All involved felt Ken's presence, as the Competition was a huge success. Participants saw both the new sights and scenes of Australia as well as the old traditions - from wine making and chocolate factories to roadside kangaroos. A fun and most memorable time was had by all.
Just after Australia's 2001 Miss Dance Drill Team International Competition, we suffered another great loss, our dear Dr. Kay Teer Crawford. It is in her memory that we are here - to celebrate the art of dance drill team.
